1. The death of hobbies by
“What concerns me the most about modern times is that my generation seems to have no hobbies, and too many pastimes (which literally means to pass time). We don’t have a skill-based activity that we can pour ourselves into so wholeheartedly that we lose track of time—and this is as vital for our mental being as nutrition is for the body.”
2. Mad Magazine is forever by
Report from a Mad Magazine exhibit at the Norman Rockwell Museum
3. Best books of 2024 so far by
Great list. Lots to catch up on, plus a new one from Halle Butler I will check out
4. The NYT Has a 100 Best Books List, plus (reflection on “The Best Minds” discourse) by Freddie deBoer
Freddie adds his own thoughts to the best books list, but the opener about “Best Minds” by Jonathan Rosen and the conversation around psychiatry and mental illness in the public square is worth continuing.
If you’re not familiar “Best Minds” is about a memoir about a childhood friend of the author’s who is at once brilliant and violently dangerous.
It was one of my favorite books from 2023 and well-worth picking up
ICYMI: my thoughts on the Times list for best books of the century

Notes on reading/watching/listening
Finished reading: “Crypto Confidential” by Nat Eliason
If you want a primer on crypto basics, plus a nice rise & fall story, this is good and breezy
Still reading: “Foster Dade Explores The Cosmos”
Drugs! in boarding schools! Bad things happen!
Almost done.
The format is the best part of this, it reads almost like a “found” history, and the author could have done a slightly better job leaning into this and then cutting like a 1/5 of the book. It’s about 500 pages.
Still watching: “Presumed Innocent” on Apple TV+
Started “Man in Full” on Netflix
Based off of the Tom Wolfe novel and the same creator from “Presumed Innocent” but overall it’s been disappointing, I don’t think I’ll continue
Watched: “Little Women”
Greta Gerwig version
After watching “A League of Their Own'“ with my 8 and 10 year old daughters, we followed it up with another sister story
Gerwig has done so many great movies in a relatively short period of time. Such a great film.
The painting is Edward Hopper’s “People in the Sun.”
Keep going-
