Things to share this weekend (11/9)
sandwiches, creative independent, JanSport, millennial snot, coney island
Hey, I took my kids to Coney Island and I liked the aesthetic there, hence the postcard, more on that below, this newsletter is ostensibly about books, there’s a bit about books in here, but I was at a “networking” meetup the other day and someone else had based a lot of their dissertation on House of Leaves, just like I had done with my master’s thesis, I think it freaked both of us out, then I went to Strand the next day and they had a bunch of copies of House of Leaves, it really is a great spooky book for the fall, give it a read if you never have…onward:
A century of sandwiches at Atlas Obscura
It’s a new cookbook
And here’s the Instagram of the author eating different sandwiches with recipes dated by the year he’s following
The Creative Independent
This is one of my favorite sites about the work of art that I never read enough.
I dove into this DT Robbins interview (a writer) the other day, but hey there’s so much good stuff, here’s a quick snapshot of the homepage:
My year of tech and relaxation by at Cluny
I posted a YouTube video of myself speaking directly into the camera for half an hour, describing how social media had destroyed my life. That same day, I deactivated my Instagram account. I had started to downgrade, a process that would tank my stats and save my life.
The writer wants to write about how you don’t need a smartphone only to be washed out by a million emails and Zoom calls
On Millennial Snot at the Upheaval
Pity the “front row kid,” the wordcel who grinds his youth away for straight A’s only to find that the spoils of the market go to the back row goober who inherits his dad’s used car lot. If only there was some way to turn society upside down, so the front row kid could be on top. If only society could be more like grade school…
That would be a start, but the nerd doesn’t just want to be recognized for his intelligence. He also desperately wants to be cool. He wants to prove to the world that he won’t be shoved into a locker any more. He’s with it now, he uses the latest teen slang, he “understands the assignment.” This is how you get balding hetero professors saying stuff like “she ate and left no crumbs,” and “big mad” and other phrases that will sound embarrassingly dated in a few weeks.
People share memories of JanSport at NYTimes
I had a JanSport in high school and loved it and wanted it and mine was usually black, its leather bottom stained with a bunch of pens that broke once I shoved all of my heavy textbooks on them
This isn’t mine, but I like the image:
Notes on reading/watching/listening
Listening: Punk rock version of “Stick Season” by Knuckle Puck
I saw Knuckle Puck last year and I liked them more than I care to admit
Reading:
Still going with A Little Life, but I’ve slowed a bit
Dynamics of Spiritual Life by Richard Lovelace
About the history and renewal of Christian movements in the US
Watching: Watched “Wolfs” on AppleTV
Not the greatest movie ever, but Brad Pitt and George Clooney are so good together, the delivery of their banter makes it worth it, and they’re making fun of each other the whole time
OTHER:
Took the kids to Coney Island and it was their first time. The rides were closed, but we hit the aquarium and it was nice to be at the beach in NYC in 74-degree weather (?)
I will always eat at a restaurant with food or figurines on its roof
One of my daughters wants to bring all of her friends back
It reminded me of Mr Robot which has a bunch of scenes set at Coney Island, here’s the arcade they used, but we didn’t go in (prob closed for the season)
Keep going-
