I've been a catholic reader since grade school and was very into sci-fi for years but basically stopped until Dune was published in 1980 or whenever. I've read it twice at least. But nothing else has drawn me in even when friends or students recommend an author. In terms of fantasy, I've enjoyed the first three Game of Thrones novels but never got into #4 and #5.

when i taught intro to writing at a community college, some kids tried to thrust "wheel of time" on me, and i was like "respect, but no thank you"

I couldn't get into it either. So many raved-about books struck me as too heavy in world building and too weak in character building--and also not very well written. I was surprise by the first game of Thrones novel and used a scene in a CW class. They loved it. They'd been following the series but almost none of them had read any of the books. P.S.: I've really enjoyed CS Harris's Regency mysteries because she's a terrific writer, evokes all the senses and creates wonderful people.

i'm more likely to watch sci-fi than read it. I enjoyed "three body problem" the series but won't pick up the book. i've never watched or read GoT. I guess "wheel of time" is fantasy, i should add that to this list

Me too!. My spouse loved all the books in The Expanse series. I read one and thought it was just okay, so I watched the series and it had a great set-up of Earth vs. the Mars Colony. Same feeling with The Martian: loved the movie, just couldn't get into the novel.

So many things are cross-genre these days. I wonder if you may be excluding things you’ll like because of the label on them.

For example, here are a couple of poems that might quicken your old interest in poetry.

The first one could also fall into your #2 category and, since it’s a narrative poem, #5 as well.

The second is perhaps the first Barbie poem; I don’t know of anything earlier. The poet’s sense of humor is startling and original.
